Karl-Jason Mawdsley – Motion Graphics, VFX and Video Director

With over 15 years in the industry, I’ve developed a unique skillset. I love telling stories through moving pictures, and have created work for some incredible brands across broadcast, social and most things in-between.

As passionate about the process as the final product, I’m involved in everything from initial concept, to final delivery – delivering pitches, directing scripts, storyboards, shoots, and all aspects of post-production.
I have had the pleasure of working with some great people and am currently the Creative Manager for the in-house production agency of AO.com, providing creative leadership to a team of over 40 VFX Artists, Motion Graphics Designers, Video Editors, 3D Modellers and 3D Animators.

2011 – Present 

Provide creative direction for large in-house production agency. Responsible for providing creative direction and producing work for broadcast, social, corporate for clients such as Microsoft, Samsung, Hotpoint, Bosch and ao.com, working closely with Commercial/Insights teams to analyse ROI and streamline/maximize profitability/reach.  

Daily running of creative and post-production studio, managing a team of 40+ VFX Artists, Motion Graphics Designers, Video Editors, 3D Modellers and 3D Animators.

Proofing and signing off all video/artwork  

Collaborating with cross-functional teams and advertising agencies 

Built a large post-production and creative team from initial interview stages to compliment business objectives, establishing a well-balanced team and a strong collaborative environment. 

Implemented team development strategy/structure to promote a passionate team dynamic and enhanced cooperative skillsets 

Conducting monthly one to ones and annual appraisals 

Working to budget and justifying the commercial value of projects 

Presenting and pitching creative treatments to clients, executives and board-level stake-holders 

Using analytics and sales data to evaluate ROI of campaigns, provide feedback and inform future activities

Put in place best practices for production teams, including the development and overhaul of IT infrastructure, artwork, pre-production, production, post-production workflows. 

Established 3D workflow pipeline utilising C4D, zBrush, Realflow, Marvellous Designer and Octane Render and the latest technology in GPU rendering.

2003 – 2011 

Responsible for all creative content for web, print, video, social and live, developing an engaged and loyal audience. 

Produced an extensive catalogue of creative work for use in weekly live events 

Directed all live AV including lighting, cameras and display  

Recruited, managed and trained a volunteer workforce to produce high-quality, engaging content

My life is about my beautiful wife and daughters, football, walking my dog, reading great books, watching great films and making great coffee. Not necessarily in that order.
